This is a poll to see what the beliefs are concerning different degrees of punishment in hell.
Lately, I have been hearing more pastors who believe in a worse (I don't know what can be worse than the basic description of hell) punishment for those who sinned more.

Ouch, I messed up and it won't let me take it back.
Personally, I believe there are varying degrees, so that one vote should be the middle. My mouse slipped.
Two for "varying", sorry folks. -
This is just a question to consider.
Folks believe the will be varying degrees of rewards for christians in the Kingdom Age and also in heaven.
Why not the same in hell?

If I were burning in hell I don't think I would care about the degree. All I would know was that it was never gonna end. That, in and of itself, would be hell enough.

Matthew 11:21-24 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
There are degrees of punishment in Hell. Jesus taught it. It will be more tolerable for some than for others (how, we may not be able to imagine--but God knows).
God says that it will be more tolerable for the people of Sodom and Gomorroh than it will be for the people of Capernaum. Why? Because for all the mighty works that Christ did in that city, there was still great unbelief. They did not believe inspite of his miracles and of his words spoken by Him in their very presence. That will bring a greater condemnation on them. The more light a person has, the greater responsibility they have for that light.

Thank you for the votes. I appreciate it.

Varying degrees of punishment is rooted in Greek mythology and RCC teachings. There is no biblical basis for the theory (as far as I can tell).
Please, feel free to enlighten me if there is. Except for the Matthew quote, DHK. That's really reaching.

Consider Luke 12:47-48
And that servant who know his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. Everyone to who much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. (from the ESV)
In his book Christian Theology, Millard Erickson cites these verses and the Matt 11 verses cited earlier in this thread to teach that there will be degrees of punishment in hell. His comments are found on page 1240. -
Lu 12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. -
More theology from parables?

PAR'ABLE, n. [L. parabola; Gr. to throw forward or against, to compare to or against; as in confero, collatum, to set together, or one thing with another.] A fable or allegorical relation or representation of something real in life or nature, from which a moral is drawn for instruction; such as the parable of the trees choosing a king, Judges 9.; the parable of the poor man and his lamb. 2 Sam. 12.; the parable of the ten virgins, Matt.25.

"All scripture is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction..."
Of course we get theology from parables. -

Mild, Hot and on Fire

There might need to be an "extra hot" for those who are really bad, sort of like the degrees of hotness in a hot sauce contest! ;)

Is there any scriptural support for various degrees?
