Some of us have been getting smoked in other threads for what we and/or our church does extra-biblically...altar calls, Sunday school, etc.
I figured we could get a list of extra-biblical things going we Baptists do.
Our church has numerous musical instruments that play along with our singing.
Musical instruments are extra-biblical to the NT.
Also, we have a van that goes around the neighborhood picking up children for Sunday school and children's church.
Children in church and children's church are extra-Biblical to the NT.
What else?

Optional - Off the top of my head:
1. Christmas and Easter services
2. Denominations such as SBC, IFB, Primitives, etc.(this thread applying to strictly Baptist)
3. The WMU in the SBC or other auxilaries
4. Seminary trained ministers
5. Annual offering reports (for taxes)
6. Choir
7. Pastoral vestments
8. Youth programs
9. Vacation Bible School
10. Letters of transfer and membership
I'll try to think of more as the days go by.

It occurred to me that "women speaking in church" is extra-biblical...
!!!!! -
MOST of the extras we have in the church today (building, platform, pulpit, etc) were extensions of Roman Catholicism.
MOST of the others (time of service, instruments, order of worship, denominations) were extensions of the Reformation.
And for a Baptist to admit that the traditions we follow are either Catholic or Protestant is GALLING. -
Midweek Services as a test of "spirituality"
Sinners prayers for salvation.
Tiny crackers and plastic cups for the Lord's Supper. -

Stained glass windows
Hymnals
Hymns
Two part harmony
Three part harmony
Four part Harmony (here's a nice dry website on this)
Baptismal pools
I'm sure I'll think of more later

This is an inference which cannot be proven, and is usually the result of the belief in the radical discontinuity between OT and NT. However, believers rejoiced with music, singing and dance in the OT, and there is no reason to believe they ceased doing so in the NT.
Unless one believes the OT in general and the Psalms in particular have been cut-off from the NT believer, then making a joyful noise is not only allowed, but is commanded.
Psalm 81
1 Sing for joy to God our strength;
Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.
2 Raise a song, strike the timbrel,
The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
At the full moon, on our feast day.
4 For it is a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob. -
Passing the offering plate.
singing the Doxology
Sunday school

Thursday night "SOUL-WINNING"

Correction on this one. 1 Cor 9 makes it clear that there were paid pastors in the NT as does 1 Tim 5:17. -

AMEN! :D
The real issue is not what is extra-biblical, for we would need to eliminate much of our church practices, such as a microphone for the pastor to be heard and parking lots for our cars, but the real question is what is being done that is anti-biblical; what does the church do, if anything, which is against the instruction and doctrine of the Bible?
Under the anti-biblical category I would add PackerBacker's two, Midweek Services as a test of "spirituality" and the Sinners prayers for salvation, as well as "walkign the aisle" and deacons serving as elders.

True. True, Chris.
However, there is evidence against this being done in "church" (synagogue, temple, whatever). -

Amen and Amen. You're preaching now! -
Chris,
I would add to that list of anti-biblical traditions this one:
"Teaching as doctrine the precepts of men." (Matt. 15:9 NASB) -
Ok, someone please explain what is so wrong with midweek services? I don't think it's a test of spirituality...we get a message on Wednesday night as well as put in our prayer requests...I don't see how that could be bad????

quote:
Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

There's nothing wrong with a Wednesday service - or a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. But in many Baptist circles, one is considered less than Baptistic if one does not have a Wednesday service. That is wrong, and smacks of legalism.

I may be reading this wrong, Kathy, but I don't think anyone is saying this is wrong as much as they are saying it should not be a measuring device as to how spirtual you are. In other words, one should not say if you don't go to Wed. night service, you are not spiritual.
As far as the "forsake not the assembling", does this mean that you should be at the church every time the doors are open? If so, the church where I use to attend was a rather large church, and had something going on EVERY night.

Will someone tell me why all of my post are double-posted? Am I doing something wrong?
-
a completed bible is something the nt didt have, but there again do we? :D
-
...and so what is wrong with every night? We are the Lord's bought with a price; why does one who claims to love the Lord not want to be in church?
