My dw and i went to a carb-friendly (or you can get
a sugar rush, whatever :) ) cafeteria. They
had some cauliflower with tomato chuncks and
spices. We have cans of tomato chuncks
around the house to use with pasta -- voila!
Dr Atkins is happy! The South Beach millionares
are happy! And supper is yummy again!!!

Ed really likes that Cauliflower and tomatoes. I have used up all the cans of tomatoes and fresh cauliflower so I must go to the store tomorrow to buy more cauliflower and tomato chunks.

I may even add some meatballs.

Yea, this is weigh in day and I have lost another pound, a total of 14 pounds.

My doctor was so kind. She said I shouldn't worry too much about my weight, but I think I need to lose 15 more pounds.

I am not following strictly a low carb diet, but there is a bonus with this diet, I feel better!

Anyone know of a good place to get a "professional" type scale? Wife is looking to start a weekly "weigh-in" at the clinic and we will have to buy a good digital unit - $200-300 range??

I need a bargain price on a cattle scale. Maybe one of those portables the DOT use for spot inspections...

The Mayo Clinic Diet Myth

For more than 30 years the so-called "Mayo Clinic Diet" has surfaced in many forms and places. Various versions push grapefruit or eggs or meat and promise to peel off pounds magically.

We can offer you clear and official advice: don't believe any of these diets. They did not originate at Mayo Clinic and are not approved by Mayo Clinic. These diets may promote temporary quick weight loss. However, they are not nutritionally balanced or a safe method of weight loss for long-term success. Such diets can be dangerous for some individuals.

The diets prescribed by Mayo doctors and dietitians are individualized for each patient's needs, taking into account medical history and current eating and exercise habits. There is no one diet that works for everyone.

For scales check the JC Penny website. I think they may have a professional digital, not sure I saw it but didn't read about it. They also have scales that weigh accurately up to 400 pounds if you have problems with the ones that weight 300, or just want to make sure your scale is more accurate..

Sue,

No real diet to speak of at the present time. Finacial straits have seen to it. Why is it that everything has to break down at the same time? Water pump, radiator, fuel pump, tires, doctor bills, and now Ive got to have three root canals and three crowns!

My wife wants us to start using the Weight Watchers plan. Not join the program, but start eating according to their program.

At this point, I really don't care what we do. I really want to get back on Atkins, but even hamburger is almost out of our grocery budget right now.

Trotter you are so right! I just read an article in the AJC about how those of us on very VERY limited means have to eat more fattening and less healthy foods because it's cheaper!

Spaghetti costs a lot less than fresh veggies and lean meats. :( Since our finances have gone so sour, I've gained at least 15 pounds and it's a very uncomfortable gain. :( Let alone unhealthy!

Diane, you are so right. I have read articles about how people can't stay on the South Beach Diet because it is too expensive.

When I buy fresh veggies for salads, it seems we can't eat them fast enough before they spoil. So we eat salads every meal until they are gone. We are spending more money on food than we were. But I have learned to be more creative with salads and veggies. We eat lots of fish, salmon, turkey, chicken and a little beef. We had a turkey meatloaf for supper last night.

We will have that again tonight and of course, along with salad. Ed has ordered cauliflower and tomatoes with every meal.

I bought some low carb pasta so we will have spaghetti soon.

After carefully reading the labels of low carb candy, we decided that if we wanted candy, we would eat the regular stuff.

Have you noticed that so many pet names for spouses refer to food? sugar, honey, sweetie pie? ;)

Have a great day everyone!

Since I won't use the artificial sweetners, I'm concerned about the new low calorie Coke. Has anyone seen the ingredients?

Diane ..... There was one thing that stopped me in my tracts from drinking diet soda and reg diet drinks. The sweetner is fine as long as it's maintained at a constant temp. IF it rises (i'm thinking it's in the 80's) the sweetner turns to formaldahyde. Then back to sweetner. Most people who drink diet drinks, are prone to stomach aches and irritation. Basically personally I don't think it's worth it. What I have learned from various family with Diabetes and having it myself while pregnat with child #2 is splenda. It's a low calorie sweetner made from sugar. While you can't get that in soda. You might limit yourself to one reg soda a day and drink iced tea (THE OTHER POP) hehe instead. Or just drink your eight glasses of water (which will make you gain weight then lose it after your body stabalizes).
I hope this helps
God Bless you!

I have been drinking Diet Dr. Pepper, on a regular basis, for 5 years and have had no problems with it.

I don't usually refrigerate it, but rather pour it in a glass with ice.

It has NO carbs and NO calories...

I also drink MORE than 8 glasses of water a day!

It's a wonder I don't float away. No, I haven't lost enough weight for THAT yet.

LOL. I'd never had any problems either, It just bothered me. I figured I took so many risks with my health that the 150 calories wasn't worth it. I personally loved the taste of Diet Pepsi Twist.

Washington Post May 25, 2004
The top soda companies have attempted to boost their sales for years by promoting new soft drink flavors, however profits have shown minimal growth of one-half percent a year since 1998. Now, two of the soft drink giants, Pepsi and Coca-cola, are competing against one another for the market share of carb-conscious and low-calorie consumers through the release of their mid-calorie colas.

After enduring losses from competitors and other beverages including water, industry experts have expressed uncertainty regarding the success of these new mid-calorie soft drink ventures.

The expected unveiling for Pepsi Edge, Pepsi’s mid-calorie soda, is anticipated in mid-June 2004, however advertising campaigns won’t begin until after the product has been released.

Coca-Cola gained an edge over Pepsi after the earlier unveiling of its mid-calorie drink, C2, during the final competition on “American Idol.” In addition, Coke will be giving out free samples of their new soda at a variety of venues, from grocery stores to ballparks.

As carb-counters become an increasingly strong global trend, both soda companies have plans to target this exploding market.

As reported by the Washington Post, Dave DeCecco, a Pepsi spokesman, discovered that over the past two years there was a 75 percent increase in the number of dual users--consumers who drank both diet and regular soda. This is the market Pepsi stated they hoped to attract with their new cola.
For those of you unable to decide which is worse for you, sugar or artificial sweeteners, Pepsi and Coke will make it easier for you by coming out with a new drink that will contain both. Stopping soda is clearly one of the most important physical things you can do to achieve higher levels of health. Soda is one of the main nutritional reasons why most people suffer from health problems. Why?

Nutritionally Bankrupt - It parallels alcohol in one profound similarity--if one drinks all that sugar the appetite is relatively suppressed for nourishing foods like vegetables and that results in nutritional deficiencies. This is independent of all the damage that sugar can do.

Phosphoric Acid - May interfere with the body's ability to use calcium, which can lead to osteoporosis or softening of the teeth and bones. Phosphoric acid also neutralizes the hydrochloric acid in your stomach, which can interfere with digestion, making it difficult to utilize nutrients.

Sugar - Soft drink manufacturers are the largest single user of refined sugar in the United States. It is a proven fact that sugar increases insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging and many more negative side effects. Most sodas include over 100 percent of the RDA of sugar.

Aspartame - This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soda. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilispsy/seizures. Further, when aspartame is stored for long periods of time or kept in warm areas it changes to methanol, an alcohol that converts to formaldehyde and formic acid, which are known carcinogens.

Caffeine - Caffeinated drinks cause jitters, insomnia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, elevated blood cholesterol levels, vitamin and mineral depletion, breast lumps, birth defects, and perhaps some forms of cancer.

Tap Water - I recommend that everyone avoid drinking tap water because it can carry any number of chemicals including chlorine, trihalomethanes, lead, cadmium, and various organic pollutants. Tap water is the main ingredient in bottled soft drinks.

You're welcome.
