Good night where were you walking? What you describe are the goings on in the Tenderloin District. That's been a rough vice filled neighborhood for over a hundred years. You are condemning a 49 square mile city over experiences of a less than 1 square mile neighborhood. If you had bothered to ride the 38 Geary bus west, you'd have seen the changes in the demographics. What's true at Geary and Hyde; isn't at Geary and 6th Avenue.
And when did you visit San Francisco? The SF of 2011 isn't like the SF ov the mid 80s.

XXX rated businesses, theaters, and nude gentlemen clubs, gay bath houses, and the list goes on. When I walked around the city on warm evenings, I felt threatened by the gang presence, and angered with the aggressive gays who tried to pick up on me.
Be forewarned that if you, as a male, especially, have the slightest propensity to be seduced by the spirit of sexual sin and lust, I'd stay away from the city. It is like a child in a candy store environment, who can't deny their hunger for all forms of candy
